JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles have added two players for the 2012-2013 season, C-N head coach Mike Mincey announced on Friday.
Bearden High School guard Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.) and transfer Shyra Brown (Cleveland, Tenn.) from Austin Peay State University have joined C-N’s signing class, bring the class size to five. They join Sevier County’s Carly Pippin, William Blount’s Tatum Burstrom, and Grundy County’s Haley Coffelt to round out Mincey’s first recruiting class.

Koeneman helped the Eagles to a 28-26 record this season, playing three different positions and finishing the year among the nation’s leaders in a number of categories.

Guard Jay Lane (Manassas, Va.), guard Andrew Barnett (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) and forward Josh Rogers (Bristol, England) have all signed to play for Benson and the Eagles in the upcoming season. The group joins Knoxville-product Carson Brooks (Knoxville, Tenn./West High School) in this year’s class.

CONOVER, N.C. – Carson-Newman’s Gavin Hay fired a 3-under 69 in the final round to finish 11th and the Eagles combined for their best round of the tournament to take 15th at the 2012 South/Southeast Super Regional, which wrapped up Wednesday in Hickory, N.C.
The Eagles posted a total of 292 (+4) for their best round of the tournament and to climb into the midst of a tight middle of the field. C-N finished eight strokes and eight spots behind Georgia Southwestern.

PACE, Fla. – Carson-Newman senior Erica Ray (Maryville, Tenn.) shot an 83 (+11) in Tuesday’s final round of the NCAA D-II Super Regional Two to finish 38th with a 54-hole total of 241 in her final collegiate event. The senior, palying as an individual, was 2-over par on the back nine with eight pars to close strong, but stumbled out of the gate with a 45 (+9) on the front side at Stonebrook Golf Club.

Eagles tied for ninth after opening round at Super Regional
CONOVER, N.C. - Carson-Newman junior Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) shot a 2-under par 70 and is tied for third and the Eagles are tied for ninth after the opening round of the 2012 NCAA D-II Men’s Golf Southeast Super Regional, played Monday at the Jones Course at Rock Barn Golf Club. Hay birdied the 16th and 18th holes to surge into the top three late in the day on Monday. The first team All-South Atlantic Conference selection fired a 34 on the back nine to crowded seven-way tie for third. He had five birdies in his round.

Carson-Newman's Van Bruggen named CUATC’s 2012 Head Athletic Trainer of the Year
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman head athletic trainer Mike Van Bruggen has been named the 2012 Head Athletic Trainer of the Year for NCAA Division II schools. The award is given by the College & University Athletic Trainers Committee (CUATC) of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). Van Bruggen is in his 12th year as Carson-Newman’s Head Athletic Trainer. He primarily serves as athletic trainer for C-N’s football and softball teams, while overseeing all aspects of health care for C-N's 450 student-athletes in 16 sports.

Eagles ride Koeneman’s 20th home run to 6-1 win at West Georgia
CARROLLTON, Ga. – Carson-Newman’s Kyle Koeneman hit a three-run home run in the top of the first and pitcher Evan Faithful held the Wolves to a lone run over eight innings as the Eagles beat West Georgia, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles move to 27-25 with the win and wrap up their season this weekend with a three-game series against Georgia Southwestern in Americus, Ga.

Eagles finish fourth, Lady Eagles take seventh at Southeast regional meet
HICKORY, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles won the high jump, long jump, triple jump, and 110-meter hurdles en route to finishing fourth at the 2012 Southeast Regional meet, held on the Lenoir-Rhyne Campus on Friday and Saturday. The Eagles finished fourth with 123.5 points, 15 behind Wingate University for second place and 31 points behind Mars Hill, who dominated the distance races. The Lions won with 154 points.

Wingate breaks away late to eliminate Eagles in SAC Tourney
FOREST CITY, N.C.—A grand slam by Jacob Karr broke open a tight game and the Bulldogs poured it on in the late innings to earn a 17-2 victory over Carson-Newman and advance to the championship round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship. Karr’s grand slam in the top of the eighth turned a two-run Wingate lead into an 8-2 cushion. Karr’s grand slam was one of his two hits on the night. Thomas Spitz slammed two homers and drove in five runs for the Bulldogs. Wingate hit five home runs on the night. The Bulldogs advance to the championship round to face Tusculum at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Carson-Newman is eliminated from the tournament.

Koeneman, Eagles advance with win over Catawba, 7-5
FOREST CITY, N.C.— Carson-Newman led by as many as six runs, but had to stave off a late rally by Catawba to earn a 7-5 victory in the third round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship. Carson-Newman led 7-1 through six innings, but Catawba rallied for four runs to keep the outcome in doubt until the end. Carson-Newman was led by SAC Player of the Year Kyle Koeneman with two hits, including a three-run homer. Chris Dula had two hits and two RBI for Catawba. Carson-Newman faces Wingate tonight, with the winner advancing to tomorrow’s championship round. Catawba is eliminated from the tournament.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Fourth-seeded Carson-Newman exploded for six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 9-1 win over No. 5 seed Tusculum in six innings, Saturday morning in an elimination game of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Championship at Red Edmonds Field on the Tusculum campus. With the victory, the Eagles (34-21) advance to the elimination bracket final against the loser of Saturday’s winner’s bracket final between No. 1 Lenoir-Rhyne and No. 3 Anderson. Tusculum is eliminated from the tournament to end its season at 32-25.

Forest City, N.C.----The fourth-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs got a solid start from sophomore right-hander Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.), while redshirt junior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) blasted a three-run homer as Wingate prevailed 6-3 over Carson-Newman on day two of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Tournament. The Bulldogs improve to 30-21 overall, and will take on top-seeded Tusculum College Saturday at 12 p.m. The Eagles fall to 25-24, and will take on Catawba Saturday at 3:45 p.m.

Lady Eagles’ Shoemake, Shealy named to SAC All-Tournament Team
FOREST CITY, N.C. – Carson-Newman pitcher Mary Shealy had three pitching victories and belted three home runs to join teammate Bri Shoemake on the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball All-Tournament Team. The pair led C-N to a 3-2 record and a third-place finish in the tournament. C-N rallied from an opening-round loss to win three-straight games over Mars Hill, Catawba, and Tusculum in the loser’s bracket.

Eagles ride Koeneman’s 20th home run to 6-1 win at West Georgia
CARROLLTON, Ga. – Carson-Newman’s Kyle Koeneman hit a three-run home run in the top of the first and pitcher Evan Faithful held the Wolves to a lone run over eight innings as the Eagles beat West Georgia, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles move to 27-25 with the win and wrap up their season this weekend with a three-game series against Georgia Southwestern in Americus, Ga.

Eagles finish fourth, Lady Eagles take seventh at Southeast regional meet
HICKORY, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles won the high jump, long jump, triple jump, and 110-meter hurdles en route to finishing fourth at the 2012 Southeast Regional meet, held on the Lenoir-Rhyne Campus on Friday and Saturday. The Eagles finished fourth with 123.5 points, 15 behind Wingate University for second place and 31 points behind Mars Hill, who dominated the distance races. The Lions won with 154 points.

Wingate breaks away late to eliminate Eagles in SAC Tourney
FOREST CITY, N.C.—A grand slam by Jacob Karr broke open a tight game and the Bulldogs poured it on in the late innings to earn a 17-2 victory over Carson-Newman and advance to the championship round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship. Karr’s grand slam in the top of the eighth turned a two-run Wingate lead into an 8-2 cushion. Karr’s grand slam was one of his two hits on the night. Thomas Spitz slammed two homers and drove in five runs for the Bulldogs. Wingate hit five home runs on the night. The Bulldogs advance to the championship round to face Tusculum at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Carson-Newman is eliminated from the tournament.

Koeneman, Eagles advance with win over Catawba, 7-5
FOREST CITY, N.C.— Carson-Newman led by as many as six runs, but had to stave off a late rally by Catawba to earn a 7-5 victory in the third round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship. Carson-Newman led 7-1 through six innings, but Catawba rallied for four runs to keep the outcome in doubt until the end. Carson-Newman was led by SAC Player of the Year Kyle Koeneman with two hits, including a three-run homer. Chris Dula had two hits and two RBI for Catawba. Carson-Newman faces Wingate tonight, with the winner advancing to tomorrow’s championship round. Catawba is eliminated from the tournament.

Anderson ends Lady Eagles' SAC Tournament run, 2-0
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Anderson University advanced to the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Championship game with a 2-0 victory over Carson-Newman College Saturday afternoon at Red Edmonds Field. The third-seeded Trojans (38-12) will play top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University (45-11) Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Shoemake, Lady Eagles eliminate Tusculum, 9-1
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Fourth-seeded Carson-Newman exploded for six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 9-1 win over No. 5 seed Tusculum in six innings, Saturday morning in an elimination game of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Championship at Red Edmonds Field on the Tusculum campus. With the victory, the Eagles (34-21) advance to the elimination bracket final against the loser of Saturday’s winner’s bracket final between No. 1 Lenoir-Rhyne and No. 3 Anderson. Tusculum is eliminated from the tournament to end its season at 32-25.

Lance's late home run lifts Lady Eagles past Catawba, 3-2
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Caitlyn Lance hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning as Carson-Newman College rallied for a 3-2 victory over Catawba College in an elimination game at the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Championship Friday evening at Red Edmonds Field. The fourth-seeded Lady Eagles (33-21) advance to face fifth-seeded Tusculum in an elimination game Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Wingate hands Eagles first loss in SAC Tournament, 6-3
Forest City, N.C.----The fourth-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs got a solid start from sophomore right-hander Olen Little (Charlotte, N.C.), while redshirt junior first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) blasted a three-run homer as Wingate prevailed 6-3 over Carson-Newman on day two of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Tournament. The Bulldogs improve to 30-21 overall, and will take on top-seeded Tusculum College Saturday at 12 p.m. The Eagles fall to 25-24, and will take on Catawba Saturday at 3:45 p.m.

Shealy keeps C-N alive against Mars Hill, 10-4
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman’s Mary Shealy homered twice, including a grand slam, and pitched four perfect innings to open the game, to lead C-N past Mars Hill, 10-4, in an elimination game in the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament. Carson-Newman advances to face Catawba at 6 p.m. at Red Edmonds Field on the Tusculum campus at 6 p.m. this evening.
