Eagle Bats, Bridgewater Spark Sweep of Newberry, 9-1 and 7-2
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles
surrendered three unearned run and belted five home runs to sweep a
South Atlantic Conference doubleheader from visiting Newberry
College on Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball
Complex. The Eagles grabbed game one, 9-1, and pulled away in game
two to win 7-2.
With the wins, C-N moves to 6-6 on the year and 3-2 in SAC play.
Newberry falls to 9-7 overall and 0-2 in SAC play.
Game 1
Carson-Newman 9, Newberry 1
Carson-Newman starter Austin Bridgewater (Morristown, Tenn.)
tossed a complete game, and Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.), Jeff
Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.), and Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.) all
homered as the Eagles beat visiting Newberry in game one, 9-1.
Bridgewater scattered five hits and struck out five to improve to
2-1 on the season. He held Newberry to just one extra-base hit.
Rogers and Lockwood hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth as the
Eagles pounded out 11 hits and three home runs.
Rogers line drive blast to left center, his fourth of the season,
plated two, as the Eagles built a 7-1 lead. Lockwood followed with
an opposite-field shot to cap the Eagles’ biggest inning of
the afternoon.
Newberry grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Pierce Labrador
(Lexington, S.C.) scored on an error by Eagle first baseman Derek
Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.). A one-out line drive by NC’s
Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) bounced off the glove of Long as
Labrador scored from second.
Carson-Newman tied the game in the bottom of the second as Wes
Dozier’s (Cornelious, N.C.) two-out double to right center
plated Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.), who reached on a fielder’s
choice, to make it a 1-1 game.
The Eagles grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third when Mills Rogers
(Simpsonville, S.C.) ripped a two-out double down the line in left
to score Mason Guymon (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), who singled to lead off
the frame.
Carson-Newman would move ahead 4-1 with two runs in the
fourth.
Lamson led off the inning with his fourth home run of the season,
a solo blast to centerfield. Long followed with a triple off the
wall in left center. He would score on a one-out double by Cody Nix
(Cartersville, Ga.), C-N’s third extra-base hit of the
inning.
The Eagles would take advantage of two Newberry errors in the
fifth to as Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) reached on an error
to lead off the inning and later scored to push it out to 5-1.
Rogers finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Lamson and Long
each had two hits in four plate appearances.
Labrador led Newberry with a 2-for-5 afternoon and scored
NC’s only run.
Starter Chris Roman (2-2) took the loss for Newberry.
Game 2
Carson-Newman 7, Newberry 2 (7)
Senior first baseman Derek Long homered twice and starter Cy
Fraker (Indianapolis, Ind.) combined with D.J. Ferguson (Jupiter,
Fla.) to allow five hits and two unearned runs as the Eagles beat
Newberry in game two, 7-2.
Long drilled solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings to
help Eagles break open a 2-2 game. The senior drove an offering
from Newberry starter Dale Bennett (LP, 2-1) over the right field
fence to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. He would add an insurance run
in the sixth with a solo shot to left center.
Fraker struck out three in four innings of work. He pitched of jam
in the fourth after two C-N errors, getting Labrador to ground out
to end the inning.
Ferguson walked one and hit a batter, he also allowed two hits,
but the senior forced two double-play balls in the fifth and sixth
innings to pick up the Eagles’ first save of the season.
Sophomore Aaron Vargas (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) put the game away with a
two-run single later in the sixth to make it 7-2. He finished the
game 2-for-4.
Jeff Lockwood and Corey Lamson each had RBI singles in the first
inning as C-N built an early 2-0 lead.
Newberry would rally to tie it at 2-2, behind three Carson-Newman
errors, before the Eagles would pull away in the final innings.
First baseman Edmund Gravely led Newberry with two hits.
The two teams wrap up the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at
the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
