Carson-Newman Baseball 2010 Season Recap
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Eagles finished the 2010 season with a 31-18 record and a 15-9 mark in South Atlantic Conference play, good for fourth place in the league.
The Eagles, who put together winning streaks of nine and 11 games and were ranked as high as 28th nationally, led the conference in home runs per game (1.51) and triples per game (.29). C-N was also among the national leaders in several categories, ranking 28th in scoring (8.9 runs per game), 25th in doubles per game (2.33), sixth in home runs per game (1.51) and 13th in slugging percentage (.546).
Outfielder Jeff Lockwood and shortstop Mills Rogers were named All-Region and to the first team All-South Atlantic Conference baseball team, while first baseman Derek Long and pitcher Austin Bridgewater were named to the second team.
Lockwood batted .398 with 59 runs scored and 67 RBIs, all were team highs. He also hit 20 home runs on the year, the second most in Carson-Newman history.
Rogers finished the season with a .378 average and a team-leading 18 doubles. He also broke the school record for hit by pitches in a career with 40.
Long, a three-time All-SAC selection, took second team honors, and was rewarded for his work off the field. He was named SAC Scholar-Athlete for baseball after graduating with a degree in Health Care Administration and carrying a 3.53 GPA. He also batted .391 with 15 doubles and eight home runs in starting all 49 games for the Eagles.
Bridgewater finished 5-1 with a 4.32 ERA for the Eagles as their No. 1 starter.
Reliever D.J. Ferguson finished the season with the league's second lowest earned run average (3.60), while starting pitcher Cy Fraker had the fewest walks per game and pitcher Wes McIntyre was second in the SAC in strikeouts per game (11.5).
Reliever Ryan Hendrickson was selected as the fifth overall pick in the Frontier League draft by Traverse City after going 4-0 on the season and tallying two saves. He ranked third on the team in strikeouts with 46 and held opponents to a team best .212 batting average.
