Alabama-Huntsville Defeats Carson-Newman, 74-47, In Season Opener For Both Squads
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of
Alabama-Huntsville held the Carson-Newman Eagles scoreless for the
opening seven minutes and never trailed in a 74-47 season-opening
win Monday night at Spragins Hall in Huntsville, Ala.
UAH moves to 1-0 on the season, while C-N falls to 0-1.
UAH built and early 7-0 lead, holding the Eagles scoreless until
the 12:28 mark of the first half.
Freshman Trey Caruthers (Kingston Springs, Tenn.)
connected on a baseline jumper to cut the lead to 7-2 and get the
Eagles on the board, but back-to-back threes by UAH’s Josh
Magette (Birmingham, Ala.) would stretch the Charger lead out to
21-6 minutes later.
The Chargers forced nine C-N turnovers and connected on five
three-pointers in the first half to build an 18-point lead at the
break, 34-16.
The Eagles shot just 25.9 percent from the floor in the first half,
and made just 1-of-12 three point attempts.
Junior J.J. Wesley (Mobile, Ala.) and sophomore
Cameron Sharp (Knoxville, Tenn.) each had 11
points to lead the Eagles. Wesley had all 11 in the second half.
Sharp also had two steals and two assists.
Four Chargers scored in double figures, led by Tyler Hanback
(Meridianville, Ala.) with 13.
Carson-Newman returns to action this weekend in the Lincoln
Memorial Classic. The Eagles face Concord on Friday night at 6 p.m.
and Hiwassee College on Saturday at 2 p.m. Both games are at Tex
Turner Arena in Harrogate, Tenn.
C-N and UAH will play again next Monday in Jefferson City. Tipoff
is at 7 p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse.
