Carson-Newman's Sanders named SAC Player of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Carson-Newman freshman guard Ishmael Sanders (Cleveland, Tenn.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday.

Sanders averaged 36.5 points per game while shooting 50 percent (24-of-48) from the field and 50 percent (17-of-34) from behind the arc. He also pulled down seven rebounds and collected 3.5 steals per contest.

Sanders started the week with a record-breaking performance in a win over Mars Hill as he fired in a SAC record 51 points and knocked down a school record 11 3-pointers. He was 17-of-29 from the floor, including 11-of-23 from 3-point range, on his way to becoming the first player in conference history to score 50 points or more. Sanders also had six rebounds and four steals in the win.

He followed up his record-setting night with a 22-point effort at Newberry, including six 3-pointers. Sanders grabbed eight rebounds and tallied three steals.

On the season, Sanders leads the Eagles in scoring with an average of 13.6 points per game.
