Former Eagle basketball standout Tony Mills passes away
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Former 1960's Carson-Newman basketball standout John Anthony (Tony) Mills has passed away. He was 62.
Mills was the first African-American basketball player at Carson-Newman, and played for the Eagles from 1966-1970.
He was recruited out of Jefferson City High School by Dick Campbell. He played one season for Campbell at Mossy Creek, before spending the last three years of his career playing for Gene Mehaffey.
Mills was a part of four Eagle teams that combined to go 92-37 in his four seasons. In 1968-69, Mills' C-N squad won the Volunteer Athletic State Conference Tournament and the VSAC Eastern Division title.
