JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Forward Quinche Dowdell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) will join the Carson-Newman men's basketball team for the 2009-`10 season, head coach Dale Clayton announced Tuesday.
Dowdell, a 6-5 transfer from Appalachian State, will have three years of eligibility remaining after playing last season for the Mountaineers.
"I am thrilled that Quinche has chosen C-N," Clayton said. "He is not only an outstanding player, but also a fine student."
Dowdell saw action in 18 games for Appalachian State in 2008-09 and averaged 1.6 points and 1.4 rebounds per contest, highlighted by a seven-point performance against UNC Greensboro, a five-point effort against Texas and a four-point outing against Kentucky.
During his senior season at Oak Ridge High School, Dowdell averaged 19.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game as he led the Wildcats to a 32-3 record and a berth in the Class 3A state playoffs. For his efforts, Dowdell earned first team All-District, All-Region and Tennessee Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State honors. He was also named District Player of the Year and was an honorable mention All-American selection by Street & Smith.
With the addition of Dowdell, the Eagles' signing class is now at eight. He joins signees Trey Caruthers (Kingston Springs, Tenn.), Tyler Cross (Jacksboro, Tenn.), Collin Crane (Knoxville, Tenn.), Joe Meady (Strawberry Plains, Tenn.), Cameron Hall (Atoka, Tenn.), Erwin Staten (Huntsville, Ala.) and Brandon Evans (Salem, Va.).
