NORTHBROOK, Ill. — Carson-Newman senior defensive end Byron Bell (Knoxville, Tenn.) has been named a nominee for the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, officials announced last week. The 6-1, 230-pound Bell started 10 games for the Eagles in 2010. He recorded 42 tackles, including 10 for a loss, and 6.5 sacks for a unit that ranked second in the conference in scoring defense and rushing defense.

Eagles Show "Heart" in Rain-Soaked Spring Game, Orange wins 19-13
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman College football held its final full-contact scrimmage Tuesday night with the annual Orange and Blue game at Burke-Tarr Stadium. In game full of big plays by the offense and defense, the Orange team took the victory, winning 19-13. The spring game was moved up a day to Tuesday due to the encroaching weather, but the rain still caught the Eagles by kick off.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — After two days of work in only shorts and helmets, the Carson-Newman football team will finally see their first live action since its 49-48 win over Tusculum College on Nov. 13. It will be one of only three full pad, full contact practices for the Eagles. Per NCAA rules, Carson-Newman can only hold 15 practices over the next few weeks, with only so many slotted for scrimmages and full pads. Carson-Newman's first scrimmage will be Thursday.

Jones, Eagles Stand Out in 2011 Cactus Bowl
KINGSVILLE, Tex. - Carson-Newman punter Chris Jones (Rome, Ga.), safety Mario Russell (Columbus Ohio), and offensive tackle Michael Tribue (Antioch, Tenn.) all participated in Friday night's 2010 Cactus Bowl, a Division II all-star game. Jones and Tribue played on the Blue Devils all-star squad, which lost to the Red Storm, 28-6. Russell playde in the secondary for the Red Storm.

Nine Eagles Earn All-South Atlantic Conference Honors
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Nine Carson-Newman Eagles have been named to the 2010 All-South Atlantic Conference football teams, which the league announced earlier today. Defensive back Mario Russell (Columbus, Ohio) was named to the first team for the third year in a row. He is joined by offensive lineman Michael Tribue (Antioch, Tenn.), last year’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner, punter Chris Jones (Rome, Ga.) and defensive lineman Zeke Andrews (Eastman, Ga.).

Belk, Eagles Take Thrilling Season Finale at Tusculum, 49-48
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Quarterback Doug Belk rushed for 208 yards and scored the game-winning two-point conversion with 35.4 seconds remaining as Carson-Newman edged Tusculum 49-48 in one of the most exciting games in the storied history between the East Tennessee rivals. The Pioneers (6-5, 2-5 SAC) had an opportunity to win on the final play of the game, but senior kicker Gareth Rowlands’ 53-yard field goal hit the left upright as time expired.

Sparks receives prestigious Neyland Award
Carson-Newman legendary coach Ken Sparks has been named recipient of the 2010 Gen. Robert R. Neyland Trophy, presented each year by the Knoxville Quarterback Club. First awarded in 1967, the trophy is named in honor of Hall of Fame and legendary head coach Gen. Robert R. Neyland, who led the Vols from 1926-52. The presentation was made at The East Tennessee Chapter of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame banquet, held on Saturday at The Foundry in Knoxville. Sparks was also honored on the field in pregame ceremonies before the annual Dish Network Orange and White Game.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. When talking about the series history between Carson-Newman and West Alabama, theres not much to mention. The Eagles and Tigers have only met on the gridiron one time, which was in the semifinals of the 1972 NAIA playoffs. At the time, West Alabama was known as Livingston State.

Va. — The Carson-Newman College football team battled back from a disastrous first quarter to put forth a complete team effort in a 45-20 win over Glenville State at Morris Stadium Thursday night. The Eagles (1-0) used all three quarterbacks they dressed for the game, but the offensive hero was sophomore QB Johnny Foster (Roebuck, S.C.) who entered the game in the second quarter to score 31 unanswered points against the reeling Pioneers.

NORTHBROOK, Ill. — Carson-Newman senior defensive end Byron Bell (Knoxville, Tenn.) has been named a nominee for the 2011 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, officials announced last week. The 6-1, 230-pound Bell started 10 games for the Eagles in 2010. He recorded 42 tackles, including 10 for a loss, and 6.5 sacks for a unit that ranked second in the conference in scoring defense and rushing defense.

Eagles Show "Heart" in Rain-Soaked Spring Game, Orange wins 19-13
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman College football held its final full-contact scrimmage Tuesday night with the annual Orange and Blue game at Burke-Tarr Stadium. In game full of big plays by the offense and defense, the Orange team took the victory, winning 19-13. The spring game was moved up a day to Tuesday due to the encroaching weather, but the rain still caught the Eagles by kick off.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — After two days of work in only shorts and helmets, the Carson-Newman football team will finally see their first live action since its 49-48 win over Tusculum College on Nov. 13. It will be one of only three full pad, full contact practices for the Eagles. Per NCAA rules, Carson-Newman can only hold 15 practices over the next few weeks, with only so many slotted for scrimmages and full pads. Carson-Newman's first scrimmage will be Thursday.

Jones, Eagles Stand Out in 2011 Cactus Bowl
KINGSVILLE, Tex. - Carson-Newman punter Chris Jones (Rome, Ga.), safety Mario Russell (Columbus Ohio), and offensive tackle Michael Tribue (Antioch, Tenn.) all participated in Friday night's 2010 Cactus Bowl, a Division II all-star game. Jones and Tribue played on the Blue Devils all-star squad, which lost to the Red Storm, 28-6. Russell playde in the secondary for the Red Storm.

Belk, Eagles Take Thrilling Season Finale at Tusculum, 49-48
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Quarterback Doug Belk rushed for 208 yards and scored the game-winning two-point conversion with 35.4 seconds remaining as Carson-Newman edged Tusculum 49-48 in one of the most exciting games in the storied history between the East Tennessee rivals. The Pioneers (6-5, 2-5 SAC) had an opportunity to win on the final play of the game, but senior kicker Gareth Rowlands’ 53-yard field goal hit the left upright as time expired.

The 14th-ranked Carson-Newman football team has played in the friendly confines of Burke-Tarr Stadium for its first three games this season, but on Saturday, the young Eagle squad will face its first road test of 2010, and it wont be an easy one. C-N is set to face UNC Pembroke at 2 p.m. at Grace P. Johnson Stadium in Pembroke, N.C. The Braves enter the contest with a 2-1 record and went 9-2 last season, reaching the NCAA playoffs.

Sparks receives prestigious Neyland Award
Carson-Newman legendary coach Ken Sparks has been named recipient of the 2010 Gen. Robert R. Neyland Trophy, presented each year by the Knoxville Quarterback Club. First awarded in 1967, the trophy is named in honor of Hall of Fame and legendary head coach Gen. Robert R. Neyland, who led the Vols from 1926-52. The presentation was made at The East Tennessee Chapter of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame banquet, held on Saturday at The Foundry in Knoxville. Sparks was also honored on the field in pregame ceremonies before the annual Dish Network Orange and White Game.

The landscape of the South Atlantic Conference has been much different in 2009 than in years past, and the 20th-ranked Carson-Newman football team continues to find out each week that new teams are on the rise. After grinding out a 17-13 victory over a much-improved Lenoir-Rhyne team last week, the Eagles are set to take on another squad on Saturday that has turned things around since starting its football program in 2006.

First 2,000 Kids Receive Free F.B.I. Child I.D. Kit as Eagles Host Brevard on Saturday
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman's home football game against Brevard next Saturday has been designated as Community Day. The Eagles and Tornados are scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. at Burke-Tarr Stadium. Not only will kids 12 and under be admitted free to the game, but also in conjunction with the American Football Coaches Association, FCA Football Coaches Ministry, the FBI and Carson-Newman College, parents of the first 2,000 kids, ages 12 and under, will be given a free Child's I.D. Kit.

WACO, Tex. The Carson-Newman Eagles jumped five spots to No. 20 in this weeks American Football Coaches Association Division II Poll. Carson-Newman (6-2, 4-0 SAC) won its sixth-straight game on Saturday night, rallying for a 17-13 win at Lenoir-Rhyne behind 14 fourth-quarter points. C-N is the lone South Atlantic Conference school in the poll. Wingate (N.C.) is listed in receiving votes.

HICKORY, N.C. No. 25 Carson-Newman College (6-2, 4-0 SAC) trailed for over 54 minutes but was able to score 14 unanswered points to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne University (4-4, 1-3 SAC) by a 17-13 score Saturday night at Moretz Stadium. The Eagles are now the only undefeated team in South Atlantic Conference play as Wingate University fell to Newberry College, 35-27, Saturday afternoon at home.
