Howell's Goal in Second OT Lifts Carson-Newman Past Tampa, 1-0
COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Sophomore forward Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge,
Tenn.) scored on a breakaway in the match's 106th minute, lifting
the eighth-ranked Carson-Newman women's soccer team to a 1-0 win
over the University of Tampa in double overtime on Friday afternoon
in the PBC-SSC-GSC-SAC Invitational at the Walden Soccer
Complex.
The win was a milestone for C-N as it was the 200th in program
history. The Lady Eagles improve to 7-0 on the season, while Tampa
falls to 3-3-1.
Tampa held a 13-6 advantage in shots for the match and had an
opportunity to escape with a win less than a minute before Howell's
game-winning goal. Tampa's Brittan Spence had a one-on-one
situation with C-N goalkeeper Lauren MacKenzie
(Barrie, Ontario) but her shot sailed wide left, leaving the door
open for the Lady Eagles.
Howell then dribbled past Tampa's Pasquale Anderson to get off a
shot, which trickled just out of the reach of Tampa goalkeeper
Saige Steinmentz for the game-winning goal. The goal was Howell's
fifth of the season.
MacKenzie finished the match with five saves, while Tampa
goalkeeper Saige Steinmentz collected three saves on the day.
The shutout was the fifth for the C-N defense this season. The
Lady Eagles had seven shutouts all of last season.
C-N returns to the pitch on Sunday in the PBC-SSC-GSC-SAC
Invitational as it will take on West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga. The
match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
