Carson-Newman Places Seven On The 2009 All-South Atlantic Conference Womens Soccer Teams
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Carson-Newman
College Women’s Soccer Team led the way on the All-South
Atlantic Conference teams with seven selections, SAC officials
announced Friday. The announcement was made as a part of the 2009
Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer
Tournament, which is currently underway at Manchester Meadows
Soccer Complex in Rock Hill.
Forwards Nikki Brannen (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) and
Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), midfielder
Andrea Saevik (Bolandet, NORWAY), and defender
Melissa Morris (Sweetwater, Tenn.) were named to
the first team, while midfielders Sandra Kaelin
(Trachslau, SWITZERLAND) and Morgan Gruenenfelder
(Sweetwater, Tenn.) and goalie Lauren MacKenzie
(Barrie, Ontario, CANADA) were named to the second team.
Head Coach Phil McNamara guided the Lady Eagles to
their fifth conference title in the last seven years and was named
Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career and the second
year in a row.
The Lady Eagles were also named team statistical champions in the
categories of shutouts per match (.59) and winning percentage
(.853).
Elizabeth Hawes, a freshman midfielder from Valdese, N.C., led the
league with 17 goals and 41 total points. She becomes the first
women's soccer player in conference history to win Player of the
Year and Freshman of the Year in the same season.
The Scholar Athlete Award for women's soccer went to Abby Martin of
Mars Hill College.
Catawba College had five all-league selections. Midfielder Maria
Borland and defender Alexa Baird were named to the first team,
while forward Stephanie Borland and midfielders Tasha Wilhelm and
Katie Gair were named to the second team.
Wingate University placed four on the All-SAC teams. Defender Megan
Mastalerz was named to the first team, while forwards Kelly Adams
and Kerstin Williams and defender Madi Welch were named to the
second team.
Tusculum College placed three on the all-conference team.
Midfielder Courtney Turner was named to the first team, while
defender Ashley Bradford and forward Tramicka James were named to
the second team.
Lenoir-Rhyne also placed three on the All-SAC team. Joining Hawes
on the first team from Lenoir-Rhyne are forward Laura Linehan and
defender Catherine Hauck.
Newberry College also had three on the all-league team. Goalkeeper
Emily Rhoades was named to the first team, while midfielder
Michaela Peach and defender Sara Geisman were named to the second
team.
Lincoln Memorial University had a pair of all-conference
selections. Midfielder Leanne Reid was named to the first team,
while Raquel Abrile was named to the second team.
The Fair Play Award for women's soccer went to Tusculum and
Carson-Newman. The award goes to the team that demonstrates good
sportsmanship in conference play.
The All-South Atlantic Conference teams are selected by the
league's nine head coaches.
