Boyd, Shealy Lead Lady Eagles to Sweep of Brevard

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Junior Ashley Boyd (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and sophomore Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.) each tossed a shutout to lead the Carson-Newman softball team to a sweep of Brevard on Wednesday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action.
The Lady Eagles cruised to a 7-0 victory in game one before claiming the nightcap, 3-0, at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex.
With the sweep, C-N improves to 32-7 on the season and 10-4 in the conference. Brevard falls to 17-22 overall and 5-9 in SAC play.
In the first game, the Lady Eagles tallied five runs in the first, and Boyd gave up just four hits en route to a 7-0 victory.
Boyd (18-3) fanned four batters in seven innings of work to earn her seventh shutout win of the season.
Freshman Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah, Tenn.) led the Lady Eagles at the plate with three hits, while Boyd produced a run-scoring double. Jessie Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.), Sara Little (Calhoun, Ga.), Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.) and Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) each had a RBI single in the win.
Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) tallied two hits to lead Brevard, while Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, Va.) contributed her 19th double of the season.
Elmore also picked up the loss in the circle as she surrendered seven runs and nine hits in six innings.
The Lady Eagles took control of the game early, erupting for five two-out runs in the first. Little, Shealy and Kee each produced RBI singles, while Boyd delivered a run-scoring double. Shealy also scored on a wild pitch to help C-N build a 5-0 lead.
C-N added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach on RBI singles by Howard and Shoemake.
In game two, Shealy (11-4) tossed a two-hitter to carry C-N to a 3-0 win.
Shealy finished the contest with six strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.
C-N collected five hits for the game, including a RBI double by Howard. Sophomore Cassidy Skeen (Powell, Tenn.) and junior Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.) each contributed a run-scoring single.
Mallory and Becca Curlee (Eagle River, Alaska) each tallied a hit for Brevard.
Elmore (13-12) was tagged with the loss after giving up five hits and three runs in six innings.
The Lady Eagles gave Shealy all the run support she would need in the bottom of the third, as Skeen and Price each drove home a run with a single and Howard produced a run-scoring double to give C-N a 3-0 lead.
Shealy then retired the side in the next three innings to seal the win.
C-N returns to the diamond on Saturday at home in a doubleheader against Wingate. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex.
