Shealy, Kee lead Lady Eagles to sweep at Georgia College, 1-0 and 6-2
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Carson-Newman starter Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C) fired a five-hit shutout in game one and Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a two-run home run in game two to lead C-N to a two game sweep of Georgia College on Sunday afternoon at the Peeler Complex, 1-0 and 6-2.
With the wins, the Lady Eagles improve to 17-8-1. C-N has now won 10 of its last 12 games.
Game One: Carson-Newman 1, Georgia College 0
Lady Eagle starter Mary Shealy scattered five hits, four singles, to shut down the Bobcats in a 1-0 in the opener.
Shealy pitched out of her only jam of the game in the sixth as the Bobcats threatened.
A one-out double from catcher Anna Parker put the tying run in scoring position, but Shealy induced a line out from third baseman Maggie Davis and struck out Lauren Potts to end the Georgia College threat.
The win was Shealy's 13th on the year.
Price led the Lady Eagles with two hits finishing 2-for-3.
Game Two: Carson-Newman 6, Georgia College 2
Whitney Kee's two-run home run in the top of the fifth broke open a one-run game as Carson-Newman grabbed game two, 6-2.
Kee drove an offering from GC starter Haley Burnett over the centerfield fence for her third home run of the season. She finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Sara Kelley (Birchwood, Tenn.) added two hits for the Lady Eagles as well. Her lead-off double sparked a three-run third inning. Carson-Newman would take advantage of three wild pitches and two walks in the frame to move ahead 3-1.
Shealy again went the distance allowing five hits and two earned runs to improve to 14-7 on the year. She overcame eight walks as Georgia College left nine on base.
Carson-Newman returns to action with two home doubleheaders this week. The Lady Eagles will host Francis Marion University on Wednesday and Catawba on Friday in their South Atlantic Conference home opener. Both first pitches are at 2 p.m. at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex.
