Carson-Newman Falls to No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic State 5-0 in NCAA Tournament Action

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 3-ranked and defending Division II national champion Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis team opened NCAA play successfully with a 5-0 victory over Carson-Newman in second-round action at the 2009 NCAA DII Women's Tennis Southeast Regional on Friday morning in Savannah.

The Lady Pirates (23-1) advance to the Southeast Region final at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday to face the winner of Clayton State and Augusta State. Carson-Newman (14-3) falls short in its bid to earn the program's second-ever berth into the Round of 16.

AASU dropped just three games in taking a 3-0 lead after doubles play. The second-ranked duo of Martina Beckmann and Alida Muller-Wehlau picked up an 8-0 win over Amanda Bartlett (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Taryn Cappadona (Kennesaw, Ga.) at No. 1 doubles. Then 12th-ranked Kathleen Henry and Tina Ronel defeated Kylie Elliott (Maryville, Tenn.) and Emily Sorah (Bristol, Tenn.), 8-1, at No. 3 doubles. 7th-ranked Gabriella Kovacs and Sona Novakova completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Cassie Moulton (Maryville, Tenn.) and Elizabeth Sneed (Kingsport, Tenn.) at No. 2 doubles.

The Pirates then clinched the match with straight-set singles wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Alisa Kagukina defeated Moulton, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles, then 49th-ranked Ronel defeated Sorah, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
