Lady Eagle Volleyball Signs Two for 2009

The Carson-Newman volleyball team received two commitments during the early signing period for its 2009 class, head coach Shannon Mincey announced. Mackenzie Tyree (Daleville, VA) and Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, TN) will join the Eagles this upcoming season. PrepVolleyball.com named both Tyree and Hayes to the Defensive Dandy Team for 2008.
"I am excited about the future of our program! Mackenzie and Angelle will be able to lead this team for the next four years with their passionate style of play on the backrow. I feel so fortunate that both of these highly skilled athletes chose Carson-Newman." said head coach Shannon Mincey. "Their accolades are numerous but it was their charisma and personality that most attracted me. They will be fun to watch in the league. I expect them, together, to be a `team' for us and help our program make advances into the NCAA tournament."
Mackenzie Tyree helped lead her 2008 Lord Botetourt Virginia High School team (Coached by Nikki Johnson) to a Blue Ridge District Championship and a 2007 and 2008 Region Semi-Finalist. In 2007, Tyree finished 21st nationally on MaxPrep.com for digs per game (6.5) and in 2008 finished 34th nationally with digs per game (6.2). Tyree is a two-time District Player of the Year, All-Region 1st Team Member, and in 2008 she was tabbed the Region III Player of the Year. Tyree received 2nd Team All-State and 1st Team All Timesland in 2007.
A team captain and team MVP, Tyree holds numerous Virginia High School League Records including: 2007 (2nd) Most Digs Single Match (44); 2007 (1st) Most Digs Single Season (555); 2008 (2nd) Most Digs Single Season (518); 2005-2008 (1st) Most Career Digs 1474. Tyree is the recipient of the Wendy's High School Heisman- School Winner and State Finalist Award Winner. She has played for the Nationally Ranked Roanoke Juniors Volleyball Club and the NRV-Salem Juniors Volleyball Club. Tyree is also is a two-time All-District 1st Team Tennis player and played basketball for Lord Botetourt High. She is also very active in her community
"Mackenzie is an outstanding player with a lot of work ethic. She and her team attended our team camp this past summer. It was great to see her on our court. That got me even more excited to coach her next year. She is not only a great volleyball player but a very involved student-athlete in her school and community." Says Head Coach Shannon Mincey
Angelle Hayes comes from a rich tradition of winning in the State of Tennesee playing for Brentwood Head Coach Barbara Campbell. Hayes has led her team to three District Championships, Regional Championships, and Sub-State Championships. Hayes has two State Championship rings under her belt. Her Brentwood team fell short in the 5th set of the 2008 State Finals.
The 2008 All-District MVP was selected to the 2007 and 2008 All-District, All-Region, TN Mid-State, and All-State Team. Hayes accumulated 610 digs for the 2007 season as well was chosen team MVP in 2008. Hayes service to her community is outstanding as well. She has been a FCA co-leader, Young Life leader, and started the Care Bears Program for special education students. Hayes is the recipient of the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship which is based on leadership skills, academic achievement, and community service. She has traveled to Honduras for the past two years for missions work.
"Angelle is accustomed to winning! She has a dynamic demeanor on the court which I am most enthused about. I will rely on her leadership skills to reflect upon our team next season. She has a big heart on and off the court!" adds Coach Mincey.
